We also tube the Maury when the James River is too high. Very fun 2 hour tube trip.
Kayakers stopping to relax on an island in the Maury River.
The Maury River is a historical tributary to the James River that starts and ends entirely in Rockbridge County. The upper sections of the Maury River can become class IV and V during the Spring and other high water events. This draws whitewater enthusiast from all over the country.
We offer canoe, kayak and raft trips on the last 7 miles as the river becomes calmer and eventually flows into the mighty James River at Glasgow.
You, your boat and gear will be loaded and transported to the put in on a country road between Buena Vista and Glasgow. Once at the waters edge and launched you will experience a class II rapid immediately.
This river is much smaller and more shallow than the James River and does become too shallow to paddle during periods of low water. It also quickly becomes too high and fast to paddle after heavy rains.
But, if you can find a window to paddle this stretch, it will be well worth it. Beautiful mountain views, secluded islands and excellent small mouth bass fishing are abundant on this trip.
You pick the day, start time and time for your pick up at Glasgow. Pick up times in Glasgow are 3 pm, 4 pm or 5 pm. This paddle can be completed in 3-4 hours. Bring a picnic, stop on an island and relax.
The trip is over once you reach the Public Boat Landing at Glasgow. You, your boat and gear will be loaded and transported back to WCC where your car is parked.
Trips may not be available on Saturdays depending on other scheduled trips and the availability of a driver.
