Balcony Falls class III rapid.

Most scenic section of James River!

Snowden is a Public Boat Landing about 7 miles downstream on the James River from Wilderness Canoe Company. This trip is often referred to as Balcony Falls.

This trip contains the only class III rapids on the upper James River. It is one of the most remote and scenic trips available in Virginia and is paddled by whitewater enthusiast from all over the country.

Due to the remoteness and difficulty of navigating through the ledges and rapids, this trip is best for experienced paddlers only with at least two paddlers and no more than eight and no younger than 14 years old.

Get started.

Your sit-on-top kayak and gear will be taken to the waters edge and launched at your own pace. You will encounter two class II rapids before reaching the confluence of the James and Maury Rivers at Glasgow.

There, the river gains size and strength as it begins its decent into the gorge. The river is cutting a path through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you are along for the ride!

Stunning mountain views, fast class I and II rapids, pebble beaches, strange white boulders, pristine forests and the American Bald Eagles are just a few of the great things you will experience along the way.

This trip takes 3-4 hours to complete. You pick the day, time to start and time to be picked up at Snowden. Due to limited access for our vans and trailers at Snowden, this trip is only available for 2 paddlers on Saturdays or Holiday Weekends.‚Äč
