One of the Class II ledges on the Alpine trip.
Norfolk and Southern train bridge along the way.
We offer this popular paddle seven days a week. Trip times are 8:30 am, 10 am, 12:00 noon and 2 pm. Arrive 30 minutes early to complete paperwork (waivers), be issued paddling equipment and be briefed on where you are going and where to stop when you get back.
Alpine is a Public Boat Landing about 9.5 miles upstream on the James River from Wilderness Canoe Company.
This unique stretch of the upper James River is scenic and remote as it travels along the Blue Ridge Mountains.
After being dropped off at Alpine with your boat and gear, your adventure begins immediately with a class II rapid.
You will encounter many class I and several class II rapids on your journey back to WCC.
Along the way the river borders the George Washington National Forest for several miles, allowing opportunities to stop and explore, relax and even camp. This is unique to this stretch of river.
This trip takes most people 3.5 to 4 hours to complete. But because you are paddling back to where your car is parked, you can take your time. Have a picnic on the river bank, swim, fish and relax. When you arrive back to WCC your trip is over, so enjoy the scenery while you are out there. The river eventually brings everything we put out, back!
